Event Overview

Visual recording of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, especially, that of tsunami and the explosion accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant drastically engraved representation of catastrophe on “global cultural memory” in the modern world as well as memory of people who experienced it and that of the relevant people. In this international workshop we invite Dr. Miki Yokoigawa, Profesor Investigador Titular en Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo in Mexico and who also conducts research presentation at the National Art Academy / Information Center on Research Record of Art and Design and share the “memory” of catastrophe and trauma contemporally. We also question merits and demertis of the power audiovisual expressions have on people's empathy and imagination in order to inherit beyond time and space. How does art function to conduct possible interconversion between record and memory concerning catastrophe and trauma and to create a community in charge of its succession? We consider these points while bridging the memory of Fukushima, Hiroshima and Mexico. After the lecture of Dr. Yokoigawa, we conduct round-table discussion with participants.
