Event Overview
“Eggsploitation” is the title of a documentary film which reveals the self-interests of the surrogate industry and the exploitation, unsafe practices and abuse by the fertility clinics whose actions affects young women egg donors. The film was released in 2010 by “The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network” a non-profit organization founded in the United States.
The film discusses this important issue through scientific examination by fertility specialists and mediators, with emphasis on interviews of involved women. It also shows that naive young women are potentially exposed to serious health risks caused by the unregulated expansion of the fertility industry. It tells of women who have been misled into selling their eggs without having sufficient explanation of the physical risks to their bodies; so they cannot make an informed decision.
This film has been previously screened at universities, human-rights groups, and political groups in the U.S. In September 2013 the newest edition of “Eggsploitation”, including new cases, was released. YANAGIHARA Yoshie, (representative of the Coalition Against Surrogacy Practices, Assistant Professor at Tokyo Denki University) translated the new edition. In Japan some egg donations have already started without any legal regulations, nor sufficient research and discussions concerning the important risks to young women. In this upcoming event we will aim to inform the audience about the various kinds of problems and practices that young women could unknowingly face. We will look at the current condition and challenges as observed in the U.S., and as well, to understand the actual situation of donors and intermediates which have not been focused upon in the past.
