I heard the saying, “Nothing about us without us” which is often used in the area of disability studies for the first time in China in June 2012. It was at the session of the international meeting on persons with disabilities and social security. Now the civil society in China is vibrant. I feel it in the area of disability which I relate to.
Let me briefly introduce the main guests for this event. Mr. Xie Yan is a founder and CEO of One Plus One (Beijing) Disabled Persons' Cultural Development Center, which is a disabled people's organization in Beijing. He is a cancer survivor and uses crutches.
Mr. Zhang Wei is secretary general of the China Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Network as well as a research fellow at the Enable Disability Studies Institute. Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their family members trust him very much.
These two guests' organizations have actively involved in implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) from the civil society perspecive. They have handed in shadow reports on the CRPD, viewed from the glass-rooted NGO, in parallel to the report by the government of China.
I truly hope that this event will enable us not only to feel that the Chinese society, as well as the Japanese one, is not monolith but is filled with diversities but to share the advances toward the implementation of the CRPD. (NAGASE Osamu)
