Tripartite Discussion on the Urban Theory for Ars Vivendi Vol. 6, Special Issue on Urbanity

published: 2012-09-18

Project's aims

The purpose of this tripartite discussion is to describe the present situation in provincial cities from the point of view of historical/ideological changes, linking the insights to the “Tokyo City Theory”.

During the discussion, the participants will mainly focus on several urban theories of cities other than Tokyo (Kansai and a provincial city α) not leaving out the differences of the cities in terms of their historical context, and strive to reach conclusions that cannot be reduced to the insights already present in the Tokyo City Theory. The three participants, namely, Takashi Sakai, Teruhito Ushiro, and Masayuki Maegawa, are all conducting research in the urban theory, and this occasion shall be a good opportunity to find new viewpoints by applying their respective approaches (while confirming the points of difference) to the issues of provincial cities.

The proceedings of the discussion will be printed in the Volume 6 of the Ars Vivendi (journal published by the Research Center for Ars Vivendi at Ritsumeikan University) planned as a special issue on urbanity.
